Additional Paternity Leave (APL) regulations (April 2011)

Posted on

The right to additional paternity leave came into force in April 2011 and essentially allows the mother of a child to return to work without taking her full year’s maternity leave, and “donate” the remainder of her leave entitlement to the father, who can then take up to 26 weeks off work to care for the child.

This legislation could prove difficult for small and medium sizes businesses to administer, especially if an organisation has both employees working in the same organisation. Also companies may have difficulty in providing suitable ‘cover’ for the employees leave which may have a detrimental impact on their business.
